Custom quilts – made by hand
Modern Embroidered Quilts, Made in Canada
When my nieces and nephews were born 25+ years ago, I made them all early versions of my quilts. Having made half a dozen, there were requests for more each changing slightly along the way. I didn’t have space in my home to make the large classic quilts my grandmother and aunts made by hand 75 years ago, so I decided smaller hand-made quilts were my thing. It occured to me a lot of new parents and gift givers wanted something a bit more modern but still luxurious to gift and own, thus Laughing Girl Designs quilts was born.

FAQ
Here are some questions I get asked on a regular basis. Please do not hesitate to reach out if your question is not answered here.
How do I commission a quilt?
If you see a quilt you like on my website, please email me at info@laughinggirldesigns.ca with your request. The quilts on my website are samples of the work I have done and have already been sold so they are representations of what I can do for you.
What is the cost of a quilt?
Quilts start at $250 Cdn. The cost depends on the size of the quilt and the complexity of the design. The cost of the quilt does not include shipping or mailing the package to you. If you live in the lower mainland of BC I can mail it or deliver it to you.
I will ask you to confirm your choice of the quilt, with a 50% deposit.
How do you make your quilts?
With the exception of the adding the filling and sewing the edges together with a machine my quilts are all handmade. The quilts are made with two pieces of a solid cotton velvet with a polyester filling inside. With this in mind, it is important to note there are variations in the size of the stitches when creating the design on your quilt. While the image you select, be it an elephant or the moon is carefully made, the stitches on the quilt are not completely uniform as you would find from a machine. Part of this makes your quilt a one-of-a-kind work because a person has carefully added the stitches to an image you have identified and created a product just for you.
What is your quilt made of?
The exterior of the quilt is 100% cotton velvet. Washable and dryable in a dryer. You can also hang to air dry and then fluff in a dryer. Variations in the color of the quilt are due to the shading and light not the quality of the material or the color itself. Some wrinkling is normal and will disappear. It will not affect the look of the quilt.
The interior of the quilt is polyester. This keeps the quilt light and easy to wash. The embroidery which creates the design and the edging trim is 100% cotton.
Does the cost of the quilt include shipping and handling?
No it does not. This is a separate cost from the creation of the quilt. When you purchase the quilt we will discuss this item.
Can I return a quilt if I do not like it for something else?
No. These quilts are not refundable and cannot be exchanged. No credit is available should this occur.
How can I pay for your quilt?
Once the style and size is confirmed I will ask you for a 50% deposit. You can pay through an e-transfer or Square.
Can I request a design not on your website?
Yes. Please contact me with your idea at info@laughinggirldesigns.ca and we will start the conversation. If you have a picture or idea please send it along with your email.
How big can a quilt be made?
The maximum size is 42 inches x 60 inches or 105 cm x 150 cm. It can be rectangle, square or even round.ˀ
What colours can I have my quilt made in?
I have color samples that range from rusty brown, dark brown, dark green, dark blue, purple, black and fuchsia. Colors of the fabric depend on the availability of the velvet available. The market place is flickle and colors seem to change. I would suggest identifying a second color in the event your first choice is not available. I can send you a swatch of color through the mail if you wish.
How long does it take to create the quilt?
Once the design and color is confirmed, your quilt will take between 6 – 8 weeks to complete.
What are some popular designs for quilts?
The Sweet Dreams moon is popular for boys and girls. I have done a rocket ship in the past. Dinosaurs and animals are also popular.
What can you add to the quilt?
Customers are requesting the name of the child and or the birthdate to be added. You will note this on the elephant quilt and the heart quilt and the Sweet Dreams moon quilt. I can sketch some ideas for your consideration once you contact me. I do not typically add any other items or embellishments (lace etc.,).
Who buys your quilts?
People who commission my work are looking for a unique keepsake. They like knowing this quilt is a one of a kind and not found in any store.
What if my quilt needs repairs once I purchase it?
You will find your quilt very robust and can see alot of wear and tear. However, if any repairs are needed please ship it back to me and I will repair it at no cost.
